Glossary Terms Used by Your Medical Care Center

If you’re not a medical physician, clinical terms are often difficult to understand. We are providing you a glossary of valuable definitions that relate to our wellness and specialty services.

Inflammation

A normal reaction to injury or disease, which results in swelling, pain, and stiffness.

Joint

A joint is formed at the meeting point of two or more different bones.

Stiffness in a joint

Ligaments

A white, shiny, flexible band of fibrous tissue that binds joints and connects various bones and cartilage.

Lou Gehrig's Disease

AAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a disease of the motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It causes progressive loss of motor control. ALS is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. For more information visit www.alsa.org

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Commonly known as a MRI, Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a scanning technique used to view the brain or spinal cord. Pulsed magnetic waves, not radiation, delineate the structures within the brain. MRIs are sent to diagnostic laboratory services where Pinnacle technicians and physicians work together to diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Migraines

A common type of headache that may occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. In many people, a throbbing pain is felt only on one side of the head

Multiple Sclerosis

A chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system causing mild to severe neural and muscular impairments, weakness in one or more limbs, local sensory losses, bladder dysfunction, or visual disturbances.

Neck Pain

May result from abnormalities in the soft tissues—the muscles, ligaments, and nerves—as well as in bones and joints of the spine. The most common causes of neck pain are soft-tissue abnormalities due to injury or prolonged wear and tear.

Nerve Disorders

There are more than 100 kinds of nerve disorders. They can affect one nerve or many nerves. Some are the result of other diseases.

Neuropathy

A disease of the nerves that is caused by a disruption of the chemical processes in the body.

Neurosurgery

A surgical procedure performed at Pinnacle Medical Group’s neurology clinic in Bradenton, to treat the central and peripheral nervous systems, and spinal column diseases.

Numbness

Tingling sensations that can occur anywhere in your body, but are often felt in your hands, feet, arms, or legs

Orthopaedic Conditions

Conditions with parts of the body which includes arms, wrists and hands, arthritis, broken bones, trauma, hips, knees, legs, ankles and feet, non-surgical treatment options, shoulders, and spine

Orthopaedic Surgery

The branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, joint trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital conditions.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time

Pain

An unpleasant sensory or emotional experience primarily associated with tissue damage.

Parkinson's Disease

A disorder of the brain that leads to tremors, changes in speech and difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination. For more information visit www.parkinsons.org

Physical Medicine

In combination with rehabilitation techniques, physical medicine is a branch of medicine which aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life of those with physical impairments or disabilities.

Pinched Nerves

Nerve compression is restriction in the space around a nerve.
